Riding for a Cure

DUNCAN— The horses wore pink. And so did most of
the 60 horse riders of the Duncan Lake Horse Club in
the first “Hooves for a Cure” trail ride Saturday to
support breast cancer research.
The ride was one of 14 in the state to raise money for
such research.
Camellia Foster, event chairwoman and club secretary,
said, “All money will go right to a cancer research fund.”
The money raised goes toward funding mammograms,
research and to increase awareness of breast cancer.
While many members wore pink during the program, they weren’t alone. Some of the horses wore shades of the
color, too. And pink ribbons were tied around the trees along the trail.
“My mother is a breast cancer survivor,” Foster said, “and I wanted to do something to help.” She said she thought
one of the biggest draws of the event was the cause it was supporting. “People just called because they wanted to
help,” she said. “We were just glad to do it. “Everybody has been impacted by breast cancer. We have people on our
ride who are actually cancer survivors.”
Sherry Woodwine and Peggy Smith were two of the survivors who took part in the ride.
Woodwine has been a survivor for 20 months. Because of this, the ride had a bigger impact on her. “I think any kind
of research is great,” Woodwine said. “Without early intervention, I still wouldn’t know.” She said she didn’t want to
think about life without funding for research because of what progress has been made in recent years. “The
research is important. The chances of survival are a lot better now,” Woodwine said.
One person who was noticeably missing from the trail ride was Tresa Balthrop, Foster said. Balthrop died of breast
cancer about five years ago. She had been an integral part of the club.
Aside from entry fees, the club also raised money for research by selling T-shirts and holding a silent auction.
Although the ride was an important step in gathering funds, Foster said the event also presented a competition for
the horse club. “I think it’s been a great turnout,” she said. “We’re kind of in competition with the other trail rides.”
The Duncan Lake Horse Club meets at 6:30 p.m. on the first Saturday of each month at Duncan Lake.
